Toronto: Mr. Saturday pop-up store

With cool styles referencing the culture of clubbing and related nocturnal debaucheries from a bygone era, designer Joey Gollish has pushed his Mr. Saturday label into the global limelight since its foundation in 2017. Based in Toronto, the brand primarily sold its collections through its website and a number of local pop-up stores, in addition to a growing number of stockists overseas. A plan to launch a series of Mr. Saturday pop-up stores abroad had to cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and instead the focus shifted back to Toronto for a new and a far more elaborate iteration on home turf. Branded as an ‘ephemeral flagship store’ even, it occupies a 3,318 sq.ft. (approx. 308 sqm.) unit spread across two floors of an office building on Queen Street West, rubbing shoulders with outlets of coveted global brands such as Aesop, Shinola, Le Labo, Fred Perry and Reigning Champ. The ground floor sees a stropped back interior, revealing whitewashed walls, bare concrete flooring and an exposed ceiling. Furnishings are few, comprising of carefully sourced vintage design pieces, displays and an assortment of props. The space servers as a lounge of sorts, featuring a secletion of books and magazines, but also presents small items for sale. Upstairs a similar aesthetic can be found, but with different furnishings. Here, Mr. Saturday‘s full apparel collection can be found on sets of black steel clothing racks. A faux shipping container accommodates the fitting room and in the opposite corner sits the brand’s makeshift office. This Mr. Saturday retail space is operational until the end of this year and can be accessed by appointment only.
