Imagine a shopping experience that allows you to put on all your favourite fashion labels at the same time without having to try out every item physically. Sounds impossible, right? Well, Korean IT firm, FXGear, announced this week that they have developed a physics-based fitting simulation function that will enable a more precise fitting of clothes. The AR-based technology has been created to aid their fitting solution, FXMirror.
Predicting Your Actual Fit, Accurately
FXMirror is a virtual fitting solution that measures a customer’s body measurements. Using it is quite simple, the customer stands in front of a display that shows 3D clothing, created from actual photos, which is layered on top of the customer’s reflection on the Adisplay. Before FXMirror was first launched in 2012. It was then followed by FXMirror using an Avatar in November 2018. The “Avatar Virtual Fitting” is a virtual fitting solution that instantly creates a 3D avatar of the customer in real time using mixed reality (MR) technology so as to enable virtual fittings for a more enhanced fitting experience.
Introducing Physics-Based Fitting Simulation into the mix has taken the FXMirror to the next level. It is now capable of by providing the customer with suggestions of suitable sizes for outfits, even letting the customer see how each size fits and differs in real time. First, users’ measurements are taken to create a 3D avatar, and users are urged to try out items with the trendy 3D hairstyles available. As the user checks out how each of the sizes looks different on the body, it displays how tight or loses the size will be from XS to 3XL by determining how much pressure is applied by the clothes to each body part. It suggests the most suitable size based on the analysis of the user’s measured body size.
“The new physics-based fitting simulation function enables users to try different sizes virtually, compare the fit of each size and select the best size for them.”
Specialising in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), FXGear CEO Choi Kwang-Jin said, “While the existing FXMirror automatically supports the virtual fitting of outfits in size most suitable for users, the new physics-based fitting simulation function enables users to try different sizes virtually, compare the fit of each size and select the best size for them, which will help clothes shoppers.”

What I like most about this innovation is that it is capable of a full 3D simulation that enables 360-degree rotation. This means that it will allow me to investigate the front, back, sides, fit and design of what I have on. Also, I am quite enchanted by the idea that the mirror generates an avatar that will reflect my facial expressions and movements in real time.
As the retail tech space continues to flourish, FXGear plans to have more stores equipped with the FXMirror with the physics-based fitting simulation function and to expand the related database for the more precise application of clothes sizes by brand and item.
