London: The Vinyl Factory — Reverb

Nestled within a Brutalist architectural gem erected in London during the 1970s by Sir Frederick Gibbert, 180 Studios has emerged as a vibrant nucleus of the city’s burgeoning creative community. This dynamic venue, spread across a network of exhibition spaces, continuously showcases the wealth of artistic talent in various forms while nurturing and championing new and emerging artists. Notably, 180 Studios has commissioned groundbreaking works by innovative visionaries such as Ryoji Ikeda, Caterina Barbieri, and Universal Everything, cementing its status as a vital hub for contemporary art.

Launching on May 23rd is “The Vinyl Factory — Reverb,” a landmark multimedia exhibition that explores the intersection of art and sound on an unprecedented scale. Presented by The Vinyl Factory, an independent music and arts enterprise, this ambitious showcase brings together over 100 artists and musicians who push the boundaries of creativity across visual arts, music, film, and live performance.

Visitors to the exhibition can expect to encounter a plethora of new site-specific audio-visual installations and sonic experiences, all specially commissioned by The Vinyl Factory. Renowned artists such as Theaster Gates, Es Devlin, Julianknxx, and Caterina Barbieri will contribute to the immersive environment, with the UK premieres of artworks by Kahlil Joseph, Stan Douglas, Virgil Abloh, and Cecilia Bengolea further enriching the exhibition’s diverse offerings.

An innovative highlight of the exhibition is the “Hi-Fi Listening Room Dream No.1” installation, curated by New York City-based artist Devon Turnbull. This tranquil space provides attendees with an opportunity to delve into unheard music through vinyl records, including exclusive test pressings and studio outtakes.

Moreover, “The Vinyl Factory — Reverb” will feature an engaging program of live performances and talks, adding an interactive dimension to the exhibition. Notably, Theaster Gates’ “Amplified” will transform into a vibrant live music venue by night, hosting performances by established and emerging musicians recorded and pressed direct-to-disc on The Vinyl Factory lathe.

Complementing the exhibition is a curated selection of vinyl records, meticulously crafted by artists and released by The Vinyl Factory. Designed by acclaimed artist Ben Kelly, this dedicated space will showcase releases from a diverse roster, including Nan Goldin, Arthur Jafa, Pipilotti Rist, and Thom Yorke, among others.
