Last year, Tods unveiled their new Fellini-inspired windows to a packed house at their Madison Avenue boutique. Upon entry, guests took photo ops against a 2D Circus featuring a lion tamer and juggler designed by frequent Fellini collaborator Dante Ferretti.
The famed Italian art director and production and costume designer is also known for collaborating with such greats as a Pier Paolo Pasolini, Terry Gilliam, Frances Ford Coppola, Anthony Minghella, Martin Scorcese, and Tim Burton. He also happens to be a close friend of Tod’s owner, Diego Della Valle.
”The idea was to create something special and since I have been working with Fellini for so many years and the circus was one of his great passions and also an important theme in some of his movies, I wanted to recreate this mood,” said Ferretti in statement about the new Tods displays.
“Both of us, Fellini and myself, were born in a little town and I remember spending many Christmas holidays at the circus, so this is how the project came up.”
Acrobats, trapeze artists, lion tamers and circus animals preen across the five large display windows beneath a red-and-white striped big top that calls to mind the American flag.
Two dimensional cutouts of circus performers, ringmasters and animals were handmade and hand-painted, while a swing was made with special materials, to give it a vintage effect.
“We wanted to do something that would transmit joy of life,” Mr. Della Valle said. “As a child, the circus coming to town was an important event. Even those who dont enter the store will be cheered.”
Given the protests currently going on just a few blocks away, that may be some real movie magic, after all.
WindowsWear is excited to see what TOD’S is going to do this year!
