Playful and Stylish Clothing, Naturally Dyed with Plants and Minerals at Housework
Undyed Tops and Bottoms for Men and Women from Housework
Housework’s rigorous standards for environmental sustainability are evident in every one of their product offerings. Their clothing selection emphasizes a focus on undyed fabrics in order to minimize the resources required to make garments, and to draw attention to the beauty and variety of textiles in their natural state. Housework’s color philosophy is based on the idea that, “We are evolved to look good in these colors. They are the colors we wore exclusively for millennia.” All of the dyes and mordants their brands use come exclusively from organic sources such as tree bark, fruits, vegetables, and minerals. All of those dyestuffs are grown organically on farms located on-site or nearby the facilities in which they’re transformed into pigment, and the waste from manufacturing is able to be repurposed as compost and water for future farming to ensure a holistic supply chain from farm to finish.
Housework’s carefully curated catalog consists of an array of unique sustainable fabrics including organic cotton velvet and corduroy dyed with acacia bark, durable heavy-weight canvas in naturally fermented indigo, and many more. Strong focus is put on silhouettes that are clean but distinctive, fabrics that have structure and body, with plenty of room left for playful, flowy, more casual patterns, as well. In co-owner Marcee Jones’ words, “Organic clothing shouldn’t be limited to just the sweatpants and T-shirts found in so many of today’s health food stores. We’re specifically highlighting brands that approach their designs holistically, that are fashion-forward while still making practical considerations and holding their manufacturing to the highest standards.”
The shop’s earth-toned website (which also offers a selection of analog household goods for cooking, dining, bathing and more) challenges its customers to shop for clothing the way they shop for food. “Check the ingredients, know the source, and what went into the making of it,” is the motto of their recent lookbook Groceries which was shot in an organic produce market.
From closet to kitchen, Housework believes that it’s not only possible to live a plastic-free life without sacrificing beauty or elegance, but that humans are naturally predisposed to prefer the aesthetic qualities of organic objects.
