For high school students who want to look glam on a budget, Goodwill of Central Iowa is holding its first-ever prom pop-up shop in Johnston.
On March 8 and 9, the pop-up shop will offer prom dresses for $30 or less, along with menswear and accessories at 5355 Northwest 86th Street.
The initiative is a part of Goodwill’s efforts to offer more curated collections for people who may be shopping for specific things.
“We have some really beautiful vintage dresses you couldn’t find anywhere else,” said Sarah Ekstrand said, retail design lead at Goodwill of Central Iowa.
As more popular prom retail stores like Younkers close down, the Goodwill pop up aims to provide shoppers with all of the items they need for their special night.
Items in the collection include prom dresses and gowns, vintage dresses, suits, formal separates, jewelry, handbags, shoes and accessories.
“Young people these days are very interested in sustainability and this is reusing things that are already in existence,” Ekstrand said. “They can feel good it’s not costing a lot of money and reusing something that exists instead of buying something new.”
Goodwill is also seeking donations for the prom pop-up shop including:
- Formal dresses
- Suits
- Men’s dress shirts
- Formal separates or jumpsuits
- Evening bags
- Jewelry
- Dress shoes (for men and women)
People interested in donating to the pop-up shop should bring their items to the store by March 5.
The pop-up shop will open between noon to 4 p.m. on March 8 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 9.
