Glossier Teams Up with Project Blackboard to Revamp Tompkins Square Park Basketball Court

Glossier, in collaboration with nonprofit organization Project Blackboard and artist Na Chainkua Reindorf, has undertaken the revitalization of the basketball court at Tompkins Square Park in New York’s East Village, demonstrating its commitment to supporting local communities and aspiring athletes.

The cosmetics brand, a steadfast partner of the WNBA since 2020, unveiled the newly refurbished court during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, Connecticut Sun forward Brionna Jones, New York City Parks commissioner Sue Donoghue, and local officials including congressman Dan Goldman.

Engelbert emphasized the impact of such projects in encouraging girls to participate in sports and stay engaged. Reflecting on Glossier’s mission to redefine beauty perceptions, Kyle Leahy, Glossier’s CEO, underscored the brand’s dedication to community engagement and celebrating everyday beauty.

The refurbishment marks a significant moment for Glossier, having previously filmed its Stretch Fluid Foundation campaign featuring WNBA athletes at the same court last summer. Artist Na Chainkua Reindorf, known for her West African-inspired artwork, incorporated symbolic elements into the mural, including an eye motif representing introspection and empowerment.

Against the backdrop of budget constraints affecting New York’s Parks Department, initiatives like this and the growing popularity of the WNBA play a crucial role in empowering youth, fostering a stronger and more equitable society, according to Commissioner Donoghue.

Brionna Jones, reflecting on her own journey from playing in local parks to becoming a WNBA player, highlighted the pivotal role of community spaces in nurturing passion and skills among young athletes.

This collaboration not only revitalizes a community asset but also underscores Glossier’s ongoing commitment to promoting inclusivity and empowerment through sports and art.
