Sophie Delafontaine, Creative Director, Longchamp Answers: What Does Creativity Mean To You? In honor of the 2024 WindowsWear Awards

In celebration the 2024 WindowsWear Awards, we asked 80 diverse creatives to delve into the genesis of their imaginative journeys. Creativity, at its core, is the capacity to conceive original and valuable ideas, transcending established boundaries and thinking out of the box.

What does creativity mean to you?

Creativity, to me, is the freedom to weave imagination into reality, transcending conventional boundaries and infusing fresh perspectives into the world. It is the driving force at Longchamp that allows us to craft not just fashion pieces but stories. Each creation serves as a canvas for innovation and self-expression, seamlessly bridging tradition with a vision for the future.

What is your first memory of being creative?

I can’t recall a specific moment of first being creative; it’s always been a part of who I am. It’s a perpetual state of inspiration drawn from the world around me. Longchamp, in its essence, embodies this everlasting creativity, evolving and adapting with every passing moment.

How do you approach creativity every day?

Approaching creativity is not a mere task but a daily exploration. It’s about awakening the senses to the pulse of the world, immersing in the kaleidoscope of Parisian life, and translating those moments into designs that resonate globally. Our approach is one of constant curiosity and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Where do you find your creativity?

Creativity, for me, is an ever-evolving inspiration from the vibrancy of life. Travel, art, and the pulsating rhythm of urban life all contribute to my inspiration. It’s a fusion of creativity drawn from diverse sources—be it the neon lights of a carnival in our Spring/Summer ‘24 ‘Paris is a Party’ collection, the universal message of love embodied in the Longchamp x Robert Indiana collection, or the Erasmus-inspired ‘Longchamp University’ collection with its values of “optimiste” and “universal.” The common thread is an openness to the unexpected, a celebration of artistry, and the translation of ordinary moments into timeless designs. My creativity springs from embracing the details of life and infusing it into the very fabric of Longchamp’s narrative, where each collection becomes a vibrant chapter in the brand’s dynamic story.

What advice would you give to someone looking to cultivate their creativity?

My advice is to embrace curiosity wholeheartedly and never underestimate the transformative power of keen observation. Engage with different cultures, seek inspiration in the unlikeliest of places, and surround yourself with diverse perspectives. In the rich culmination of experiences, where exploration spans landscapes of art, fashion, and global cultures, your creativity becomes the catalyst for crafting a narrative that is uniquely yours. Much like Longchamp’s heritage, which thrives on the seamless fusion of tradition and innovation, your creative journey unfolds as a dynamic and distinctive story, breathing life into your unique perspective.
